Gadjo’s Video Jukebox #7

I’ve always been drawn to gypsy music and dancing, and as I’ve not yet been duffed up or mugged on account of this I see no reason to stop. Heck, I even once had a girlfriend who was half-Rrom, but apart from having been a professional violinist the clichés remained disappointing unfulfilled: she was quite the most responsible person I’ve ever met, rubbish at telling fortunes and never gave me clothes pegs as birthday presents. Once again, after Romanians you have to have Hungarians and vice versa, it’s only fair. Our colleague Gyppo Byard has recently drawn our attention to Mitsou. She performed for many years with the ensemble Ando Drom which, as seen in this video, also showcased some great dancing. And here they are together in one of my all-time favourite tracks; admittedly the video is little more than a photography student’s bedtime dream (and she lets her uncle Feri bácsi join in on the vocals) but I dare you not to dance!

  1. Haha, her uncle has the classic "pervert in a mackintosh" voice! The song is great. It's the kind to tune you'd like to slap a bald man's head to.

  2. Beautiful! They's real Rroms...

Gadjo - Your experience of Roma up close is, I would venture to say, far more typical than the act that gets put on for the benefit of Daily Mail readers.

Gorilla - slap my bald head and I'll turn your flea-ridden pelt into Mrs Dilo's next rug. No offence. :o{D

  3. I must agree with GB here, the uncle sounds a bit like a Hungarian Steptoe senior. Not crazy about the dancing either - all that wrist flicking is a bit fey. Bring back the brass bands, Gadj!

  5. Sorry terrible typo in the last attempt...

Great music, cheesey photography - although I did laugh when her back burst asunder in a blaze of poppies.

I'd slap a hairy pelt with a carpet beater to this music

  6. I thought this was a family forum, but this post is all dirty old men and nudiness. I shall need a lie down after this.

  7. Uncle Fester sounds very grubby Gadj... sort of bloke you might see twitching under his raincoat on Brighton pier...
    And those photography students...?
    Sx

  8. Indeed, Bananas, his voice does have a recently released from Rampton twang to it, doesn't it! The baldness connection is one that had elluded me, but I can see the mileage in it.

Gyppo, they is they is. My experience of Roma here has been ok so far - my wife's parents have Roma friends who are friendly and professional people - but I also know stories that can quickly give a community a bad name, sadly. Maybe another post. Please don't memntion those rugs or you'll get Barry Teeth worked up again!

Mr Can Bass, maybe it is we who are in the zoo and he is the one looking in.

You want brass bands, Daphers? Then brass bands you shall have. (Later, though.)

Lovely Lulu, we have hairy pelts and carpet-beaters here, and even a special carpet-beating frame in our garden! Come and join the fun!

It nearly always takes a turn in that direction, Francis, sorry.

Scarley, I'm wondering now the words are that he's singing: perhaps they can only be done justice by a man of his vocal... errr... talents.
